When you hear your dog’s toenails clicking against the floor more than the rattle of their collar, it’s probably time for trimming.  Dog toenails are unlike human fingernails in that part of the flesh grows deep into the nail.  You can cause your dog severe bleeding by a careless nail clip, so it’s important to use a dog nail trimmer, and to even then be careful.  When clipping your dog’s nails, be in a well lit area, and examine their paw before each clip.  With a careful eye you will notice the fleshy area inside the nail, and be able to avoid it with the trimmer. 

There are also products designed for pets to stop bleeding should you make a mistake, and it is wise to keep them on hand when doing any kind of nail trimming.

Even the most devout dog lover may not realize that paw pads can be rather delicate.  They should be protected from concrete in hot weather, and in inclement weather, dog boots are not a bad idea for Fido’s comfort. 

In arctic weather conditions, dog boots won’t just warm your canine companion’s paws, but protect from snow, ice, salt, and ice melt working granules down into the pads and causing him discomfort.

I like to take my dog for a jog in the morning, but on darker or cloudy days, we’re less visible.  I want to make sure that my dog gets out of the house, but I don’t want to risk his safety, which is why I purchased a dog safety vest for him.  Similar to the vests worn by construction workers and crossing guards, this bright orange vest has reflective tape and can be seen in the dark and foggy mornings.

Now when we go out, I don’t have to worry about either one of us getting hurt due to low visibility.
